Jimin's TikTok Had 5.3M Followers and Zero Videos. One Dance Added 1.8M More

For three weeks, Jimin's TikTok profile was a locked door with a crowd outside. No videos. No likes. Nothing to look at. The follower count kept climbing anyway, from 4.3M in early September to 5.3M by the 25th, a million people signing up for an account that had never posted.

Then, on Monday, September 28, he posted once. By the end of that day the count read 6.2M. By Friday it was 7.1M.

A profile with nothing on it

The Korea Herald reported on September 30 that the video is a dance to "Be Mine," posted to a TikTok account Jimin opened about a month earlier. It said the account already had 5 million followers before it held a single post, and that Jimin is the fourth member of BTS, after V, J-Hope and Jungkook, to open a solo account. It also put the video at 10 million views on release and more than 15 million by Wednesday.

Our own readings of the account line up with the shape of that story. On September 25, 26 and 27 the profile showed zero videos and zero likes at 5.3M followers. On the 28th it showed one video, 4.5M likes and 6.2M followers. That is 900,000 new followers in a day, and it is the biggest single-day jump of the run.

TikTok rounds follower counts, to the nearest 100,000 once an account is in the millions, so treat each daily figure as a close read rather than an exact one. The direction is not in doubt.

The curve

Here is how the five days went after the post:

  • Sep 28: +900K, to 6.2M
  • Sep 29: +500K, to 6.7M
  • Sep 30: +200K, to 6.9M
  • Oct 1: +100K, to 7.0M
  • Oct 2: +100K, to 7.1M

Each day was roughly half the one before it, which is how a single post behaves. The likes tell the same story: 4.5M, 6.5M, 7.2M, 7.7M, then 8.0M. Eight million likes is a lot for one dance clip, and it is also the only thing on the page.

Where that puts him

Over the last 30 days Jimin has added 2.8M followers on TikTok. Only MrBeast has added more, at 2.9M. Jimin got his with one post.

He is now #271 of 3,166 tracked TikTok accounts, which is Rare territory. Jungkook, the other bandmate we track, sits at 34.6M and #96, and the official BTS account is at 80.8M, #10. So the gap to the group's own numbers is huge, and it is also the interesting part. A fifth of the way to Jungkook already, with a single dance.

What the empty profile was worth

An account with 5 million followers and nothing posted works like a pre-order. People did not follow because of anything on the page. They followed because of who was behind it, and they were waiting for the first thing to show up.

Now there is a first thing, and the daily gain has settled at about 100,000. That is a healthy number for any account and a quiet one next to the 900,000 of day one. It also means the next jump does not depend on the dance. It depends on a second video. As of October 2 the profile still shows one.
