Apple held a phone launch today that didn't feel like the usual iPhone cycle. New CEO John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook earlier this month, ran his first keynote as chief executive, and Apple used it to introduce a foldable iPhone for the first time in the product's history. By the time the event wrapped, tech's most-watched reviewers had already turned it into content, and one of the biggest names in the game had turned up somewhere nobody expected.

What Apple shipped

The headline product is the iPhone Duo, a book-style foldable with a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display, both Super Retina XDR. It runs Apple's A20 Pro chip, carries a 48-megapixel main camera paired with the same 48-megapixel ultrawide from the iPhone 18 Pro, and uses an under-display selfie camera on the inner screen so there's no notch or cutout interrupting the fold. The frame is machined titanium with Ceramic Shield on the back and the newer Ceramic Shield 2 up front, rated IP68 for water and dust resistance. It ships eSIM only worldwide, a tradeoff Apple says buys back battery life: 31 hours of video playback from the inner display, 44 hours from the outer one. It comes in two colors, Star White and Night Sky, and starts at $1,999 for 256GB, climbing toward $3,000 at the top storage tier.

Apple also refreshed the rest of the lineup in the same event: iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199, iPhone 18 Pro Max at $1,299, both available up to 2TB. Apple Watch Series 12 comes in at $399, Apple Watch Ultra 4 at $799, both carrying new sensors that check heart rate every 5 seconds in the background and HRV every 5 minutes, a sharp jump from the old polling rate. AirPods 5 landed at $129, the same price as last year's non-ANC pair, now with active noise cancellation built in and 50% more of it than the prior generation.

Tech's biggest names reacted within minutes

iJustine, who has 7.05 million YouTube subscribers and 1.6 million on TikTok, posted a three-word verdict, "iPhone Duo is AMAZING," within minutes of the reveal. It picked up 9,600 views almost immediately, and the replies underneath turned into their own mini press conference: people asking her directly about Face ID versus the iPhone Air, camera quality, and whether Apple would ever ship a smaller version of the fold.

Marques Brownlee, 21.2 million subscribers on YouTube, did something closer to a live broadcast than a single reaction. He posted the specs as they came, one detail per tweet: the exact display sizes, the eSIM-only battery tradeoff, the carbon fiber support plates hidden inside the hinge that help minimize the crease. A single two-word post, just "iPhone Duo," pulled 868,000 views on its own. He told his audience he was "packing all of it into a video" for release later today.

That line came from Brownlee himself, watching the room react in person. It's a small detail, but it's the kind of thing that only shows up when someone with hands-on access is reporting from inside the event rather than reading a press release after the fact.

The dinner invite that went somewhere else

The stranger footnote to today wasn't a phone spec at all. IShowSpeed, who has 61.2 million subscribers on YouTube and 54.5 million followers on TikTok, isn't a tech reviewer. He's a gaming and reaction streamer whose entire channel is built around soccer, IRL streams, and chaos. He still turned up at an exclusive Apple Park dinner tonight, spotted alongside musicians John Mayer and Finneas O'Connell. A clip of him being noticed there pulled past 910,000 views on its own, more traffic than most of the product announcements themselves.

It's a useful data point about how far Apple's product launches now reach outside the traditional tech press. A foldable phone announcement used to be a story for reviewers with review units and embargo dates. This one pulled in a streamer whose average video has nothing to do with hardware at all, just because being seen near the announcement was worth something on its own.

What the numbers add up to

Add iJustine, Brownlee, and IShowSpeed's YouTube audiences together and the total comes to 89,450,000 subscribers, before counting any of their TikTok, Twitch, or Bluesky followings on top. None of the three needed to be invited to move a number that big. Two of them posted because reacting fast is the job. The third showed up to a dinner and got more views than a spec sheet. That's the shape of a modern product launch now: the keynote is one channel, and the creators covering it, on purpose or by accident, are several more.
